Year Clock: Clock that runs for a year at one winding. The most famous is a spring-driven striking and chiming clock made for King William III, which has had only three owners. A record is kept of all who wind it. Tested in 1950, its efficiency was found still to be much higher than modern clocks. A German firm makes a clock that runs five years on a torch battery.

Zaandam Clock: A DUTCH CLOCK made in Zaandam, where clockmakers worked, as well as in Friesland, in the seventeenth century.

Zodiac: The band of sky through which the Sun, Moon and planets appear to move. It is divided into twelve angles of 30 known by their 'signs' and sometimes shown on ASTRONOMICAL CLOCKS.
